Karpathos is one of the many Greek islands that lives on tourism and therefore you can find hotels and other accommodation options everywhere. But which village is the best to stay overnight? And which apartments, villas or hotels on Karpathos are the best to spend the night? In this article, we tell you about the different villages where you can stay and you will find a list of accommodations. The accommodations here are recommended by other repeaters so whatever you choose, it is always a good choice 🙂
Villages where you can stay
Karpathos has many nice villages, but not everywhere you can stay overnight. We want you to tell us about the villages, through this way you can choose a village that fits your preferences. If you would like to spend the night in the busiest part of Karpathos, Pigadia is the capital for you, but if you like windsurfing, then you should go for Afiartis! We have divided the villages into 2 categories. The first are the three best known and crowded villages. In the other four, you can also stay overnight, but it is a lot quieter. Here you will also find no (large) supermarket or a petrol pump.
#1 Villages hotels on Karpathos
Pigadia is the capital of Karpathos. Sometimes called Karpathos town. Here you will find most hotels on Karpathos. From the airport you can be in the capital in about 20 minutes by car. You will find all shops and restaurants here and most of the excursion companies are located in Pigadia such as Art & Walk. Pigadia has a very nice boulevard with many restaurants. Especially in the summer months Pigadia is a chicken coop of people but in a cosy way. Many Greeks call it Little New York;)
Here too, hotels and other accommodation abound! Arkassa is a kind of the second village on Karpathos after Pigadia. It is fairly large, has a supermarket and several mini markets. You can find several restaurants where you can eat. Our favourite places are Kipos and the Stema bar, but there are many more nice and nice places to discover. Arkassa has several positions, but Agios Nikolaos (also known as Arkassa beach) is the best known. Depending on the weather you will have wonderfully calm water over waves of several meters high!
Between Pigadia and Afiartis you will find the town of Amoopi. A lovely place with beautiful beaches and nice restaurants. In Amoopi it blows little and in the summer months, it is very hot here. We would rather recommend staying here if you plan to come to Karpathos in May, June or late September. For (large) shopping you will have to go to Pigadia, which is 10 minutes by car, there are a few mini markets. And whether you’re in Amoopi or not, you can not miss the ouzo milkshake at Skala bar!
#2 Villages with hotels on Karpathos
When you come to Karpathos by plane, you land in Afiartis, where the airport is located. Except for accommodation and restaurants you will not find much here. Are you fond of windsurfing then you are here at the right address! All windsurfers are in Afiartis because there are several windsurf schools here. But from here you can also rent bikes, go climbing, kite surfing and do yoga on the beach. Do you want to make a complete sporting holiday then Afiartis is the place to be for you!
When you drive more to the north from Finiki you end up in Lefkos. The village has several beaches, a few mini supermarkets and restaurants. Lefkos is far from the more lively side of Karpathos (Pigadia – Amoopi – Arkassa), but it is a very nice and quiet place! Also keep in mind that the nearest gas station is in Arkassa, which is +/- 35 minutes drive.
The village of Finiki is just past Arkassa, when you enter Arkassa you can also see the village. It is a small fishing village with some restaurants, accommodation and one beach. Loving fresh fish? Then this is really the place to eat! As far as accommodation is concerned, you can rest here and the advantage is that Arkassa is less than 5 minutes drive away. So you are in a more lively part with more restaurants, shops and beaches.
On the east side of the island, you will find the village of Kyra Panagia, which also has one of the most beautiful beaches on the island! Although the village does not have much to offer (read: only a beach, some accommodation and 3 beach bars) it is a beautiful place to stay! You do need a car here so that you can leave the village to go out for dinner and visit other beaches. The bus does not come (almost) here and the road to it is not really nice with the bus, so we advise against it. When you book accommodation at TUI in Kyra Panagia, you will always see a car here. The very first time that Athina and her parents went to Karpathos was in 2004. We spent the night in a hotel in Kyra Panagia. Wonderful, very quiet, but if you really want to eat and want to see something you have to drive to the inhabited world 😉 Kyra Panagia is very much in a ‘bowl’. This makes it very hot, so keep that in mind.
