In the meantime, I have been coming to Karpathos for 14 years and I still discover new spots every year. So last week I went to the beach Kato Lako with Vincent for the first time. Upon arrival, we immediately thought the same:  this is the most beautiful beach we have seen so far …!

Until a few years ago I had never heard of Kato Lako beach. Probably passed by vaguely, but I never thought about it. As 2nd excuse we always have a normal car and who goes to Kato Lako needs a 4×4 (or quad) in addition to a bit of gut. So we went to the capital last Friday to get a quad at Motocarpathos. We also rented a quad here last year and everything is always well organized. In high season you pay a lot more for a quad. We paid with full insurance 48 euros. That is for one day. While in may it was 20 euros cheaper! But we do not complain, we wanted a quad, and it is nice to drive a quad for ones instead of a car.

After a lovely breakfast in the harbor at En Plo we drove to Kato Lako. We had to search because we did not know exactly where it was, but it is easy to find. You are actually driving to Kyra Panagia. Only just before entering Kyra Panagia there is a sign ‘Lux View Villas’ (and vague Kato Lako is written on the asphalt). Here you go to the right. You then drive in front of the villas, a little straight and then to the left. The road follows itself here. At a certain moment there is a sign with the text ‘Only 4×4 – walking 20 minutes’ and from that point on I got it a bit stuffy haha! The first piece is pretty tough, especially if you’re not used to it. It is very steep and loose stones all over the place. In the end, it was not so bad, but I have to say the way back was a bit spicier. Up is more difficult and you really have to gas properly if you want to come up and then you have to be careful that you remain stable. Although the road was just swallowing, Kato Lako is more than worth it.

11/05 Update | Due to the heavy rain a month ago, the away is quite entertaining. You now have a 4×4 to Kato Lako, walking only.

Kato Lako is – because of the road to it – very quiet. There are kinda 5 beaches on Kato Lako and per beach, there were only 2 or 4 people! I could say it all the time, it’s beautiful! See you for yourself:
